EX-MIDDLESBROUGH striker Fabrizio Ravanelli insists players should not be booked for removing their shirts after scoring.

Ravanelli set the trend during his time at Juventus and Boro fans still remember the Italian pulling his top over his head whenever he netted at the Riverside.

But the 37-year-old cannot understand why today's referees have no option other than to book players who get carried away.

He said: "It's an absurd rule.

"The nicest thing to do in football is celebrate a goal and such a gesture is hardly an act of violence.

"Why did I do it so often? It was just something which happens instinctively."
